Mourinho´s gambit, Southampton´s set-piece specialist and the return of Fergie time – the Premier Le

It was another Premier League weekend dominated by VAR disputes, fixture scheduling complaints and a timely discussion on concussion protocols.

Liverpool dropped two points away to Brighton and Hove Albion after video technology intervened in a match that saw another of their players, James Milner, sustain an injury.

Tottenham capitalised on that result by reclaiming top spot with a goalless draw at Chelsea that very much falls into the tactical game of chess category.

The result of the weekend belonged to Wolves as they earned a first win at Arsenal since 1979, though Raul Jimenez s sickening clash of heads with David Luiz – later confirmed as resulting in a fractured skull for the striker – overshadowed that 2-1 scoreline.

Chelsea out to give Lampard mentor Mourinho the blues once more

Jose Mourinho has many happy memories at Stamford Bridge, but very few of them have come from the visiting dugout.

The Tottenham coach takes his side to Chelsea on Sunday looking to preserve top spot in the Premier League against hosts who can themselves reach the summit with a win.

For Mourinho, it is also a return to his first club in English football.

The Portuguese won consecutive league titles with Chelsea following his arrival in 2004 and added a third after returning to the Blues in 2013.

However, since leaving the Bridge for the first time in 2007, Mourinho has won away at Chelsea only once.

PSG boss Pochettino insists ´no issues´ with Messi after substitution

Mauricio Pochettino insisted there are no issues with Lionel Messi after the Paris Saint-Germain superstar s reaction to being substituted during Sunday s 2-1 win over Ligue 1 rivals Lyon.

Messi had a puzzled look on his face as he walked past PSG head coach Pochettino, having been replaced by full-back Achraf Hakimi in the 76th minute of the league clash.

Pochettino and Messi briefly exchanged words before the latter, who was making his home debut at the Parc des Princes following his blockbuster arrival from Barcelona, sat on the bench next to surprised team-mates.

Messi was involved in six shots (four attempts, two chances created) against Lyon and only Kylian Mbappe against Clermont (seven) has managed better in a league game so far this season for PSG.

Everton offer Seamus Coleman new deal but Yerry Mina and Andros Townsend leave

Everton have offered new contracts to Seamus Coleman, Tom Davies and Andy Lonergan but Yerry Mina and Andros Townsend will leave the club this summer.

Coleman, 34, has made over 400 appearances for the Toffees, including 25 last season, and has been offered the chance to stay at Goodison Park.

Davies, who came through the youth system at the club, managed just 20 appearances last term but boss Sean Dyche wants him to be part of his squad, along with back-up goalkeeper Lonergan.

Mina, a £27million signing from Barcelona in 2018, will leave at the end of his current contract, having had a mixed time at the club, while Townsend did not play for the club after March 2022 and also departs at the expiry of his deal.

Koeman: Atmosphere in Barca dressing room has always been positive

Ronald Koeman insists the atmosphere within Barcelona s dressing room has always been positive despite their indifferent start to the campaign.

Barca are six points adrift of leaders Atletico Madrid in LaLiga having already lost four of their 12 top-flight matches under Koeman, who replaced Quique Setien in the close season.

Los Cules were beaten by rivals Real Madrid and Atletico, as well as suffering surprise defeats to Getafe and Cadiz.

But Barca put on a much-improved showing in a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad in midweek and Koeman says wins are bound to improve the mood among the squad.

I have always seen a good atmosphere, despite the lost games. It is easier to have an atmosphere of joy when you win, Koeman said ahead of Saturday s contest with Valen…

Cardiff sign former Reading striker Yakou Meite

Cardiff have signed former Reading striker Yakou Meite on a two-year deal.

Meite scored 47 goals in 165 appearances for Reading after joining them from Paris St Germain in 2016.

The 27-year-old, capped three times by the Ivory Coast in 2019, left the Royals at the end of last season after rejecting the offer of a new contract.

“I’m delighted to be here,” Meite told the official Cardiff website.

“It wasn’t a difficult decision to join Cardiff City once they came in for me. I’ve had many conversations with the manager, and I very much liked what I heard from him and the project he wanted to achieve at this club.”

Cardiff boss Erol Bulut said: “It’s a great signing for us. He will help us a lot with his power and his speed.
