Netherlands can go far at Euro 2024, says De Ligt

Matthijs De Ligt believes the Netherlands have every chance of claiming their first international trophy since 1988 at Euro 2024.

De Ligt, who will be featuring in his third major tournament for the Oranje in Germany, did not feature in the final four games of their qualifying campaign through injury.

The 24-year-old endured another stop-start season with Bayern Munich, making 22 appearances in the Bundesliga and was left on the bench as the Netherlands concluded their preparations for the competition against Iceland earlier this week.

De Ligt has made 45 appearances for his country and is one of the more experienced players within Ronald Koeman s ranks heading into the tournament despite his age.

However, De Ligt is confident that the selected 26-man gr…

Busquets tests positive for COVID-19: Spain Euro 2020 plans hit by skipper blow

Spain captain Sergio Busquets has tested positive for COVID-19 just eight days before the team are due to begin their Euro 2020 campaign.

The news was announced on Sunday by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), which said Tuesday s planned friendly against Lithuania would now see Spain represented by the Under-21 team.

That is one of a number of measures being taken to avoid any further risks before Spain begin the upcoming tournament, with the entire squad isolating.

Spain, coached by Luis Enrique, start Euro 2020 against Sweden on June 14 in Seville.

The RFEF s statement read: The RFEF regrets to announce that its captain Sergio Busquets has given a positive result in the last PCR test that was carried out this morning at the national team tra…

Liam Gordon insists St Johnstone can bounce back from poor start to the season

Liam Gordon remains steadfast in his belief that St Johnstone can recover from their disastrous start to the season and preserve their cinch Premiership status.

The Perth club are five points adrift at the foot of the table and without a manager after Steven MacLean was sacked in the wake of Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at St Mirren – a ninth successive league match without a win.

Alex Cleland is in interim charge for Wednesday’s match at home to Kilmarnock, and captain Gordon is confident Saints – who have been in the top flight since 2009 – can get themselves out of their grim predicament in the months ahead.

“I 100 per cent believe we can turn it round quickly,” he said. “We’ve got a good squad here. We just need to start putting together performanc…

Brighton boss Hurzeler predicts swift return for injured O´Riley

Matt O Riley is in good spirits and could come back quite fast as he recovers from ankle surgery, so says Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler.

Brighton signed Denmark international O Riley from Celtic last month, but the midfielder sustained an injury on his debut.

O Riley was on the end of a poor challenge from Crawley Town s Jay Williams, and subsequently had to undergo surgery.

Ahead of Brighton s meeting with Ipswich Town on Saturday, Hurzeler said O Riley could return ahead of schedule.

He s in very good spirits. He has a great character, a great attitude, so immediately after the surgery he was very, very positive, Hurzeler said of the 23-year-old.

He is around us in the training ground, he is doing his rehab already and I think he will be comi…

Suarez bids emotional farewell to Uruguay fans after final international game

Luis Suarez gave an emotional farewell message to Uruguay s fans after the final game of his international career ended in a goalless draw with Paraguay in Montevideo.

Suarez announced earlier this month that Friday s 2026 World Cup qualifier would be his final outing for La Celeste, who he helped win the 2011 Copa America and reach the 2010 World Cup semi-finals.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona man was unable to end his international career with a victory as Marcelo Bielsa s team were kept out by Paraguay.

Suarez played the full 90 minutes as captain as Uruguay registered just one shot on target in a meek performance, but the result could not put a dampener on post-match tributes to the striker.

Addressing the crowd, Suarez said: I have only words of…

Champions League final 2021: Man City eyeing final piece of puzzle as Tuchel plots his redemption

At long last, Manchester City have made it to the Champions League final – ever since their 2008 takeover, becoming the major force in Europe has been one of their main targets.

Achieving that goal is finally within their grasp, with Saturday s showpiece being the club’s first final in the competition.

For all the success during Sheikh Mansour s ownership, the Champions League has been the missing piece of the puzzle, a situation City set out to remedy in 2016 when they hired Pep Guardiola.

It is no surprise the Catalan coach has been the man to get them to the edge of glory, such is his pedigree and reputation, though it may have taken a little longer than some expected.

However, success in Porto on Saturday is by no means a foregone conclusion, with…

Paris Saint-Germain 2018-19: How dominant title win compares to previous QSI years

Paris Saint-Germain are champions of Ligue 1 again, clinching a sixth title in seven years after Lille failed to beat Toulouse on Sunday.

The Parisians still have six matches remaining but their 16-point gap to Lille, who have played a game more, means a title race that was virtually over before it began is now officially done.

Despite plenty of teams in France s top flight playing attractive football, there is at present no side who appears capable of interrupting PSG s dominance.

No club has been able to match PSG s spending power since the Qatar Sports Investments takeover of 2011, which has transformed them from a top-six side to Ligue 1 s superpower.

Here we assess how Thomas Tuchel s first title win compares to previous years in terms of their supe…

Champions League review: 05th November 2012

Kris Commons scored the penalty that sent Celtic through to the knockout stages of the Champions League

Defending champions Chelsea exited the Champions League on Wednesday night, despite hammering Danish champions Nordsjaelland 6-1 at Stamford Bridge.

The first half was a tale of three penalties. Nordsjaelland’s Nicolai Stokholm and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard both saw efforts saved from the spot-kicks.

However, Brazilian defender David Luiz made no mistake from the spot in the 39th minute to give the Blues the lead. Fernando Torres made it two, at the second time of asking just before the interval.

The Danish champions looked like they were back in it seconds into the second half, Joshua John chipping over Petr Cech to give Nordsjaelland hope of a comeba…

5 Things We Learned From Premier League 2021/22 Season

Another Premier League season has come and gone and what a campaign it was. We had 38 gameweeks full of drama and suspense that went down to the final day of the campaign, just how the masses like it.

Today, we re going to take a look at five big takeaways we have as we enter the summer months and begin the countdown to the new season.

City and Liverpool are too good

Manchester City finished on 93 points, Liverpool finished on 92. The next closest side was Chelsea and they were all the way back in third with 74 points, highlighting just how big the gap is between the top two and the rest of the chasing pack. These clubs have won the last five titles between them and, surprisingly enough, we don t think they re going to be slowing down anytime soon.

North London st…
